Bilbao, Destination MICE
Bilbao as a city has changed a lot, recently, for those who have always known it. This city, established more than 700 years ago has undergone an important transformation since the mid ’80s of the previous century up until today.
The so-called industrial transformation brought with it unemployment and social instability, it also showed the inhabitants of Bilbao a possible new future. What was previously an industrial city is today a city of services and each day, more and more focused on tourism. Green and leisure spaces have begun to occupy what were once industrial units and empty spaces.
The river of Bilbao is beginning to set itself up as another one of these spaces for activities, leisure and amusement. In this way, this mid-sized city situated along the shores of the Cantabrian Sea, has transformed into a beautiful and dynamic city that has turned out to be attractive for those people that come from other parts of the world and come to get to know us.
National and Foreign Tourism
Today, Bilbao is a valued tourist destination for those that come from the rest of Spain as much as those that come from other countries. One only needs to stroll through Casco Viejo (the Old Town) or around the vicinity of the Guggenheim Museum to realize that each day there are more and more tourists that visit.
Bilbao is a safe city, friendly and offers a wide variety of gastronomy, culture and entertainment, added to which is a modern and easily accessible public transport network.
Furthermore, Bilbao is not only a city, it is also coastal with the public transport system such as the metro or buses connecting large numbers of surrounding coastal municipalities to the Bizkaian capital, such as Portugalete, Santurtzi, Getxo, Plentzia or Gorliz amongst others.
Likewise, Bilbao is a metropolis that is increasingly attractive as a MICE destination. The number of meetings, congresses and events of a national and international nature, framed out in this sector and held in the city, grows year after year. Aware of this opportunity, businesses and institutions come up with, and present, joint strategies to respond to the needs of the sector.
As in the Bilbao Convention Bureau, a department affiliated to the City Council of Bilbao made up of companies, agencies and different city entities that count on the necessary infrastructure to promote and host congresses and conventions.
A Well-Connected City
Bilbao is a well-connected city that has an international airport and a public transport system of the same standard as any other top-ranking European city.
The Bilbao Airport is situated 12 kilometres from the centre of the city and can be reached easily by taxi or bus.
On the other hand, Bilbao, as of 2020, will be able to count on an intermodal bus station that will be connected to trains, the tram and the metro.
The metro is the mode of transport most widely used by the inhabitants of Bilbao. The metro quickly and efficiently connects the different neighbourhoods of the city to the adjoining municipalities of Bilbao, even reaching the coastal villages, offering direct access to the beaches on the coastline without needing to use your car.
Bilbao also relies on a well-established hotel accommodation offer. There are close to 74 hotels that make available a total of 4000 rooms to visitors.
Gastronomy, Culture and Leisure
Gastronomy is another important sector that the city counts on. As Basques, we love to eat, and we love to eat well! That’s why it is not unheard of that large numbers of restaurants offer an interesting mixed cuisine that combines the flavours and traditional preparations with a more modern cuisine, full of surprises. In fact, there are six restaurants in Bilbao that, today, can count on having Michelin stars.
Bilbao is also a city where cultural and leisure activities abound. The Guggenheim Museum is an icon par-excellence, but with its interesting exhibitions, The Bilbao Fine Art Museum is not left far behind, neither the Itsasmuseum (Maritime Museum). Its theatres such as the Arriaga or Campos Theatre, its event and conference halls for conferences and concerts such as the Euskalduna and endless alternative options spread out in different places across the city.

The region of Uribe
The region of Uribe or Uribealdea, in Euskera, is one of the 7 regions that divide up the Biscay province. It is made up of 23 municipal areas amongst which Sopela, Urduliz, Plentzia, Gorliz, Bakio or Mungia are notable. The region of Uribe has a population of close to 150,000 inhabitants which grows significantly in the summer since some of its towns, especially the coastal ones, are a typical summer destination for people from Bizkaia.
Uribe comprises of coastal and hinterland and in this complete landscape we can enjoy inland valleys surrounded by breathtaking hillsides, rolling green fields reaching the coastline and finishing at the sheer cliffs that hang above popular beaches and the ever-present Cantabrian sea.
A reference in business tourism
Year after year, the region of Uribe further establishes itself as a destination for business events. And it’s because, when organising this type of event, agencies and organisations take into account the location, the communication, the infrastructure, the cultural and gastronomic offerings and variety of recreational activities.
As for communication, the region of Uribe depends on a major road network that makes it easy to access all its different municipalities and places of interest. Public transport (metro and bus) connect it with Bilbao and the surrounding neighbourhoods. Even the international airport of Bilbao can be found within this region, in the municipal town of Loiu.
Similarly, and next to the airport, The Scientific and Technological Park of Bizkaia is located. Established as one of the most important parks of its type in Basque Country and within the rest of the state. With 255 businesses set up, many are leaders in strategic sectors such as aeronautics, electronics, energy, environment, engineering, medicine or information technology.
On offer, are different catering establishments with 3 and 4-star ratings, such as the Hotel – Golf Palacio de Urgoiti, scattered throughout the length and breadth of the region and comprising of suitable spaces for organisation of meetings, conferences and exhibitions.
Gastronomy is yet another attraction to the area. The possibility of delighting in the typical tastes of Bizkaia, from typical traditional Basque cuisine as offered in Aspaldiko Restaurant or Izarza Restaurant to the new tastes and food concepts from the three-star Michelin Azurmendi Restaurant run by chef Eneko Atxa.
This region also houses some of the best-known Txakoli bodegas (white wine) in Bizkaia. The Doniene Gorrondona Bodega is situated in Bakio, the cradle of Biscayan Txakoli. It is one of the Txakoli bodegas notable for having the best references when it comes to processing their own wine. This makes it currently the only bodega, amongst those dependent on the ‘Denominación de Origen’ classification, to have their own distillery.
Furthermore, in the same locality, we find the Txakoligunea, a museum dedicated to Txakoli. Through audio-visual and interactive installations we discover the history, characteristics and peculiarities of this wine.
The Gatika municipality is where the only castle in Bizkaia can be found, the Butrón Castle. A beautiful construction erected in the 13th century initially as a Casa Torre or Tower House that for 300 years witnessed the continuous and bloody battles between the various noble households of Biscay. Once the conflicts had ended between nobles, the castle lived through a period of decadence until at the end of the 19th century it was restored, acquiring its current style and form.
To this we need to add a comprehensive offer of activities and experiences directed towards the MICE sector, companies that have adapted their active tourism and adventure products in order to align them with the needs and requirements of a niche more and more in demand.
On behalf of Troka Abentura we are creating proposals especially intended for every type of event, developing dynamics of team building, corporate social responsibility or incentives. Always based on our culture and making the most of the beautiful natural environment that surrounds us.
If you would like to know more about this fantastic region and its infinite possibilities, you can visit uribe.eu for more detailed information.
We are waiting for you!
Thanks to its location between the three small cities of Gorliz, Barrika and Plentzia, the rough Cantabrian Sea is less intense in the Bilbao Bay, creating perfect natural surroundings. The beaches of Gorliz and Plentzia, nearly one kilometre long, the Butrón river, flowing along the old district of Plentzia and curving around the Butrón castle further up, the Barrika cliffs, with their high-valued Bizkaia Flysch, where famous TV shows were recorded. All these places are connected by natural places, next to the beach and surrounding the river and cliffs.
Why is the Bilbao Bay a MICE destination?
It stays in a short distance from Bilbao (27km) and its airport (20km), with good road and public transport connection. The Gorliz beach has free WIFI and an extensive parking area.
Many facilities, such as Basque sports ‘frontones’, provide a shelter for the events in case of bad weather. The PMS (Plentzia Marine Station from the Basque Country University) offers room for meetings and events, right on the beach.
The great hotel diversity can answer the necessities of the programmed events.
It is the location of an active tourism organisation, focussed on corporate activities, with a 2000 square metres garden in front of the beach, changing rooms, showers…
The Troka Abentura buildings, with their 2000 square metres garden, are perfect for the organisation of corporate events, such as our ‘herri kirolak’ traditional sports activities and demonstration, or a gymkhana…
The Bilbao Bay offers a great diversity of possible corporate activities and events, on the ground and on the water, in the diverse settings that are available around, such as:
The Plentzia River, with calm waters, an exceptional place for activities like kayaking and BIGSUP, discovering experiences such as ‘following-the-elvers-way’, a traditional fishing activity that still goes on nowadays.
A recent team-building addition, the traditional rowing activity is a great experience to imitate the former ‘arrantzales’ (fisherman) that went whale fishing years ago.
The cliffs of Barrika, Sopela, Getxo and Gorliz offer the most amazing easy tracks, that lead us to enjoy the Bizkaia Flysch and diverse geologic expressions such as Sopela’s Pillow Lava, the golden nail from the Aizkorri beach in Getxo and the tidal plain, all dominated by the Gorliz Lighthouse. This area can be covered hiking or riding electric mountain bikes. If adrenaline is what you are looking for, the Gorliz cliffs have a path that you can enjoy jumping in the water, swimming, walking on rock layers, checking caves… Coasteering is a real blast.
In the same bay, in the water, we can benefit from team-building activities in kayak, bigsup, as well as water challenges with nets, underwater puzzles… The beach, then, is a protected sandbank, ideal for fun activities such as surfing or body boarding. It is circled by a path that links the towns from Gorliz and Plentzia.
Last but not least, the attractive offers linked to the Basque traditions and culture can be offered there. Turned into corporate experiences, both the participation and exhibition of ‘herri kirolak’ rural sports are part of the options.
A destination with many options and undiscovered by many companies and agencies still. Troka Abentura reveals it to you.
